Tool lists usually rank by popularity, which tells you nothing about whether a tool fits your job. This one is grouped by the job to be done, and every entry says what the thing is genuinely good at — including where it is the wrong choice.
How to choose without wasting a month
- Start with the job, not the tool. \”I need forty product images at print resolution\” leads somewhere. \”What is the best AI tool\” does not.
- Two candidates maximum. Run the same real task through both, once. Pick. Move on.
- Prefer tools that export. Anything holding your work hostage is a liability when it changes pricing, which it will.
- Check the terms before commercial use. Especially for anything you will sell — see print on demand for why this matters.
- Budget for churn. A third of this list will look different in a year. Skills transfer; subscriptions do not.
